Newton Road Improvement Works

A series of planned improvement works to Newtown Road in Ashford are due to take place from 16th April 2018 to November 2018.

The works led by McLaren and delivered by Walker Construction form part of the £90 million expansion of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Ashford – one of Ashford Borough Council’s Big 8 projects, which aims to drive long term economic growth for the area.

The expansion at the Designer Outlet will create 500 new jobs for the area and will add 50 new premium retail brands, attracting 5 million visitors to Ashford per year by 2023. The improvements to local roads and pedestrian walkways surrounding the centre are part of a long term project to make roads safer and improve traffic flows.

The planned infrastructure improvements will include the introduction of a signalised junction and a pedestrian crossing, which will make it easier for people to move between the International Station, the town centre and the Designer Outlet. This will include a complete re-landscape of the area.

The expansion of the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Ashford and infrastructure improvements were granted planning permission by Ashford Borough Council in 2015.

McArthurGlen has committed £1.5 million to the local community as part of the expansion, this contribution will include:

  • A completely re-landscaped access route from the Designer Outlet to the Ashford International Station and the town centre on Newtown Road to improve safety and access.

  • The introduction of a shuttle bus from the Designer Outlet to Ashford town centre.

  • Enhancement works at Junction 10a which will eventually improve commuters journey time to the Designer Outlet and Ashford International Station.

  • Further support Ashford Borough Council’s improvements to the town centre.

Due to the nature of the works being carried out, Walkers Construction will need to close Newtown Road at the junction with Romney Marsh Road for the duration of the project. There will be no access to Ashford International Station and its car parks from the A2402 and a fully signed diversion route will be in place via Orbital Park Roundabout and Crowbridge Road.

Walkers Construction on behalf of Kent Highways will be notifying local residents on the planned road improvements and the impact it will have on their journey time through a letter drop. Commuters who use Ashford International or its car parks will be notified through flyers and advertising across station ahead of the works commencing.

HS1 Ltd spokesperson:

“The planned expansion of the Designer Outlet is a testament to the exciting growth happening in the Ashford area. We will be working closely with McArthurGlen to minimise any disruption to the station and its car parks while these works take place and we look forward to seeing the completed project and the new visitors it brings to the area”.

McLaren and Walkers Construction have released a series of tips to help drivers navigate the improvement works during peak periods:

  • Check conditions on the roads and possible detour routes prior to making your journey

  • Use alternative routes to avoid road works where possible

  • Familiarise your changes in route prior to driving

  • Follow the yellow directional signage for diversion routes

  • Obey road signage for yours and the workforces safety

Peter Corr, Centre Manager, McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Ashford:

‘Our expansion is an incredibly exciting project for the local area and proudly forms part of the Ashford Big 8. Together with our local area colleagues, we are working hard to put Destination Ashford on the map as one of the UK’s major visitor destinations. We do understand that local commuters will be inconvenienced during the works period; however, we believe that this disruption will provide long term economic benefits for our local Ashford community.”

Cllr Gerry Clarkson, Leader of Ashford Borough Council:

“The expansion of the Ashford Designer Outlet will transform it into one of the UK’s premier outlet centres, enhancing the shopping experience and providing a complementary offer to our town centre. This illustrates the confidence that major investors have in Ashford and the borough’s future. It is clear that we are gaining a growing reputation as a town attracting inward investment and high-calibre, quality brands. It is pleasing to see work start on another one of our Big 8 projects which together will transform the fortunes of the borough.”
